Microgrid Feasibility to Optimize Development, Execution, and ROI

Tuesday, March 10 | 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Presented by: Mayfield Renewables

What is the technical definition of a “microgrid”? Microgrid systems, designs, and intentions are far more complex and risky than PV-only or generator-only projects. What are typical components of a microgrid system? What is entailed in a quality feasibility study? Why is it a fundamental part of a successful microgrid project? Which engineering design and financial questions should be asked during the planning and decision-making stages to ensure the system will accomplish critical goals as intended? Join this session to answer these questions from microgrid feasibility and design engineering experts at Mayfield Renewables. You’ll leave with a better understanding of microgrid systems, project development roadmap, underwriting challenges, and risk reduction.

Trainer: Jon La Follett; Director of Engineering

Jon La Follett is an industry veteran who brings an understanding of the developer’s perspective to the Mayfield team. In his role as Director of Engineering, Jon is responsible for leading the engineering team and refining engineering products at Mayfield, while also serving as an interface between our clients and the team.

A PhD physicist by training and an engineer at heart, Jon describes his 20-year career as an arc from lab-based fundamental science research & development to solving more applied problems with direct, near-term impacts on people. This experience makes him adept at solving real-world problems with science and engineering by developing products to meet market value drivers via agile R&D and product development. Jon has a proven track record and is passionate about helping commercial and industrial businesses evaluate pathways to lower carbon emissions and reliable power with distributed generation and energy storage.

Microgrid Modeling for Single-Node and Data Center Projects

March 10 | 12:30 pm – 2:30 pm

Presented by: Xendee

This beginner to intermediate-level hands-on workshop will cover the fundamentals of microgrid design, focusing on single-node and data center projects. Participants will gain a clear understanding of different objectives for microgrids and how those impact design of efficient systems. Using Xendee DESIGN, instructors will guide attendees through modeling of a single-node data center project, providing practical insights into managing diverse energy resources, optimizing energy dispatch and tariffs, and integrating technologies like solar PV, battery storage, generators, and emerging distributed energy resources (DERs).

Participants will also walk through the multi-year financial considerations and modeling techniques required to ensure microgrid project feasibility at every stage, such as common financing structures and key financial metrics (e.g., Net Present Value, Payback Year, Break-Even Year).

(Includes access to Xendee DESIGN during the course)

Microgrid Use Cases at the Enterprise Level – Hurdles, Opportunities, and Improved Reliability and Resiliency

March 10 | 3:00 pm – 5:30 pm

Presented by: EMerge Alliance

This workshop will review recent use cases of actual nano grid/microgrid architectures implemented in various market applications. A combination of design, construction, features, economics, challenges, and results will be presented for each case. Focus will be on the performance of the resulting installs including their contribution to improvement in reliability and resiliency.
