A Case Study on Novel Geomechanical Pumped Storage in Alberta

Presented by:

Henry Lau, Project Manager, Quidnet Energy

As renewables penetration increases, the electric grid will need new energy storage technologies at substantial scale capable of operating at longer durations, every day, at disruptively low cost and high durability.  Quidnet Energy’s Geomechanical Pumped Storage (GPS) is a radically low-cost form of grid-scale, long-duration electricity storage (LDES) which uses the earth as a mechanical “battery,” storing energy as pressurized water within high-pressure subsurface hydraulic lenses.  With the support of Emissions Reduction Alberta, Quidnet is actively developing a first-of-its-kind commercial GPS project paired with solar generation in Alberta.
